how to create something new whilst the whole world tries to do so?
the amalgam of soundscaping elements with fieldrecordings and cinematic atmospheres, underlined with au courant electronic beat programming isn’t even close to be called a new thing, but as always, the difference lies in the details.
ruben koster and menno jager met me raabenstein via the net, just another very contemporary behaviour, and soon after decided to start a project together. files were sent, first scetches outlined but soon the need to work face to face appeared. meeting in berlin and producing tracks together changed the lagerfeltz idea completely, filling in the personal dialogue and the necessity sharing musical positions and differences.
the album ‘aar’ by lagerfeltz takes a commodius place between the grand masters of the genre, boards of canada and broadcast just to name a few. in their research to build their own melodic universe lagerfeltz comes to you with passion and sensitive imagination, charming you with most individual sonic trophies. in other words…
doubt the conventional wisdom unless you can verify it with reason and experiment…
enjoy the melody !!!
feedback
‚aar‘ is an amazing piece of music, as nonine recordings‘ always are. i’m surprised by every release, since nonine spans a broad range of musical genres, making different things but all of them relevant and adventurous. lagerfeltz hit the target ! it had already picked my attention with the track on the ’silent amps‘ compilation, but hearing the album in full-lenght is quite an uplifting experience, since it proposes a really new way of wrapping modern classical music with electronics.

the music is instrumental and has something mysterious, almost ghostly…what? experimental electronic music where sharp industrial sounds alternate with deep beats and otherworldly samples. the music is instrumental and has a mysterious, almost eerie quality, making it well-suited for film or background music. worth it? the choice of this genre likely won’t earn the guys from lagerfeltz a radio hit. it’s also not exactly easy listening. to get the full experience, you should watch the videos they have posted online. take the first track of this album, aar#1—on the cd, it might seem a bit dull and monotonous, but when paired with the clip on youtube, it becomes an incredibly impressive piece. – score: good

lagerfeltz is yet another project from the prolific german musician, dj, label owner, and producer me raabenstein, this time joined by the dutch artists ruben koster and menno jager, with whom he collaborates remotely. aar is the release that launches this sonic adventure, an endeavor that aligns perfectly with the only rule we know from raabenstein: the absence of rules. completely at ease in the realm of electronic music technology, lagerfeltz’s work seems to create new forms with every movement, as if the music were building itself through a process of self-sustainability. not because no one has ever explored these territories before, where electronics stretch placidly across the nocturnal horizon, flickering like tiny lights against dark silhouettes with barely perceptible movements. the novelty here does not lie in that setting but rather in the way the trio operates, emphasizing meticulous care and passion, visible in the fine details of a cinematic narrative rich in mystery.
a mystery that begins with the album title, aar, and extends through every track, all of which carry the aar designation, serving as an invitation to uncover the thread that connects the entire imaginary journey evoked by these skillfully arranged and sequenced sounds. this is a digital-only release that fully embraces its nature as an advanced musical product, born from an imagination that seems ahead of its own time.

in the summer of 2008, two musicians from the dutch town of helder who operate under the name rupert&mennert met berlin-based me raabenstein online. their shared passion for experimental music led them to collaborate under the name lagerfeltz. what started as an exchange of early sketches over the internet eventually resulted in an album filled with music that won’t appeal to everyone. yet, there’s more than enough reason to take a careful taste of the pieces lagerfeltz has meticulously crafted.
there’s no single word to describe a dish made of pasta, red onion, olives, green beans, and pieces of salmon fillet, but listing the main ingredients gives you an idea of whether you’d like it. the same applies to aar. menno jager (rupert) and ruben koster (mennert) let their imagination run free, recording sounds of water, sinks, pans, and children’s toys. like skilled chefs, they chopped and processed these sounds before passing them on to raabenstein, who added unstructured rhythms, melodies, and extra atmosphere. the track ateraar even has a distinctly helder touch, thanks to singer saskia oving. on the surface, the music can sometimes seem icy cold, but those who take the time to dig deeper will find a warm and creamy core, often described as cinematic. in fact, two of the tracks have already been paired with visuals.

thanks for sending over the lagerfeltz release, glad to feature it on some of the upcoming broadcasts. enjoyed both videos as well, the editing on aar#01 alone stands out, on ateraar the beat that comes in to play towards the end is great…

a trip outta reality that i’ve enjoyed listening to. congrats on another full lenght nonine album. It’s very much like taking a trip into the nether worlds of the imagination, and yet it’s someone else’s imagination that’s created the album, and very much up to the listener to interpret. the album has all of the elements that I find intriguing in a nonine album: the meeting between dense and atmospheric electronic and the most adventurous sides of classical music. it’s been a pleasure listening to it, and it’ll get my full support…
